Keep an AI agent from looping or pulling too much in Vamo

An agent can repeat Vamo calls or fetch far more than you asked for. Preview, small examples, monthly caps, the Usage page and revoking a key keep it in check.

Article summary

  • An AI agent connected to Vamo can repeat the same call or fetch far more than the task needs.
  • The Vamo API can preview a call without running it.
  • A Vamo account owner can set a monthly cap on a member of the account.
  • The Usage page in the Vamo app shows what the account has used this period and the latest activity.
  • Revoking a Vamo API key at Set up > API keys stops it working immediately.

An AI agent can repeat the same Vamo call, or fetch far more than the task needs. Five things keep that in check. Preview a call, ask for a small example first, set a monthly cap, watch the Usage page, and revoke a key. The first two shape how the agent works. The last three are controls on the Vamo account.

Why it happens

An agent decides its own next step. Most of the time that is what you want. Sometimes it goes wrong in one of two ways.

It loops. A call fails or returns something unexpected, and the agent tries the same call again and again.

It pulls too much. You ask for a few strong people and it fetches every page of a broad search. Or it looks up every person on a long list when you wanted five.

Ask for a small example first

The habit that helps most is to start small. Ask for a handful of results, read them, then widen the search if they look right.

A prompt like this works in any AI tool:

Find five developers who fit this role and show me those. Do not fetch more pages or look anyone up in more depth until I say so.

Large Vamo results come back a page at a time. An agent only gets the next page when it asks for it. Telling it to stop after the first page is enough to hold it there.

If the agent starts repeating itself, stop it in your AI tool and say what you saw. Ask it to explain the last result before it tries again.

Preview a call before running it

The Vamo API can preview a call without running it. This suits a coding agent that calls the API directly and is about to start a large job.

Ask the agent to preview first and tell you what it plans to run. The API reference covers the calls an agent can make. Give a coding agent the Vamo API covers that way of working.

Set a monthly cap

An account owner can set a monthly cap on a member. A cap is the backstop for a tool that signed in as that member, when nobody is watching it.

When a member reaches their cap, Vamo refuses further calls from them for the rest of the month. The agent sees a too many requests error. Too many requests explains what that error means and what to do.

A cap on one member does not stop anyone else on the account.

Watch the Usage page

The Usage page shows what the account has used this period, and the latest activity under Recent activity.

Owners and admins also see a section called By person and key. Each row shows what that person or key has used this period. If an owner set a cap, the row shows it, and says Limit reached once it is hit.

A member sees their own activity. An owner or admin sees everyone's.

A separate key for each agent gives each agent its own row. Look here after an agent's first real job. A key that used far more than expected is the sign to tighten the prompt or set a cap.

Revoke the key

If an agent will not stop, cut it off. Open Set up > API keys, choose Revoke on the key's row and confirm. The key stops working immediately. This cannot be undone.

A tool that signed in with a browser holds no key. It is listed under Connected tools on the same page. Choose Remove on its row to sign it out.

Revoking does not undo what the agent already did. It stops the next call. When you are ready, create a new key and give it to the agent.

FAQs

How do I stop an agent that keeps calling Vamo?

Stop the agent in your AI tool first. If you cannot, open Set up > API keys in the Vamo app and revoke the key it uses. A tool that signed in is removed under Connected tools on the same page. Either takes effect immediately.

Can I limit how much one person uses in Vamo?

Yes. A Vamo account owner can set a monthly cap on a member. The Usage page shows the cap beside what that person has used. It marks the row Limit reached when the cap is hit.

Where do I see what my agent has used in Vamo?

Open the Usage page in the Vamo app. It shows what the account has used this period and the latest activity. Owners and admins also see usage by person and key.
