Connect Gemini CLI to Vamo

Gemini CLI should connect to Vamo with an API key sent in a header, or by calling the Vamo API directly. Vamo has not confirmed either route yet.

Article summary

  • Vamo has not yet confirmed any way of connecting Gemini CLI from a fresh account.
  • Gemini CLI should connect to the Vamo search server with a Vamo API key sent in a header.
  • Gemini CLI can also call the Vamo API directly with a Vamo API key.
  • The Pick your tool section does not offer browser sign-in for Gemini CLI, so both routes here use an API key.
  • A Vamo API key is created at Set up > API keys, on a Pro or Enterprise plan, and is shown once.

Gemini CLI should connect to Vamo with an API key sent in a header. It can also call the Vamo API directly with the same kind of key. Vamo has not confirmed either route from a fresh account yet, so treat this page as what should work.

The ways Gemini CLI can connect

There are two.

The Vamo search server with an API key. Gemini CLI adds Vamo as a server and sends your key in a header with each request. This works in any tool that lets you set a header.

The Vamo API directly. Gemini CLI is a coding agent, so it can call the Vamo API over the web with your key. No server is added.

The Pick your tool section does not offer browser sign-in for Gemini CLI. Both routes here use a key.

Which one we recommend

Use the search server with a key when you want to ask for people in plain language. Gemini CLI reads Vamo's guide and runs the search for you.

Use the API directly when you are building something that calls Vamo from code. Give a coding agent the Vamo API covers that route.

What you need

  • A Vamo account on a Pro or Enterprise plan. API keys are on those plans.
  • A role that can create keys: owner, admin or user. A read-only member cannot.
  • A key from Set up > API keys. It is shown once, so store it before you close the page.
  • Gemini CLI must be able to reach mcp.vamotalent.ai and api.vamotalent.ai.

Choose the key's permissions when you create it. The search and enrich preset is enough to search.

Where to get the current steps

Open the Pick your tool section at Set up by hand. If it lists Gemini CLI, choose it and use the line it writes.

If your card does not list Gemini CLI, there is no guided path for it yet. Two things can stand in:

  • Choose Other in that section. It gives you one line to paste into your agent. Connect another tool explains that route.
  • For the direct route, point Gemini CLI at the API reference.

We do not print the steps here. They change as Gemini CLI changes, and we have not confirmed them.

What a first good result looks like

Start a new session and ask for people. For example:

Use Vamo to find the strongest engineers at <company>.

A good answer names real developers, says what each has built, and says why they fit. Your key then shows a recent last used time at Set up > API keys.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Gemini CLI says it cannot reach Vamo, or the key is refused. See Vamo won't connect.
  • A direct API call returns an error. API errors explains each one and what to read in it.
  • The key is lost. It cannot be shown again. Create a new key and revoke the old one.

If Gemini CLI works for you, or does not, tell us with the feedback link on this page. It helps us confirm this route.

If something is not working

Hand this to your agent
Paste this line into your assistant. It reads Vamo's troubleshooting guide, runs the checks, and tells you what it found.
Read https://vamotalent.ai/skills/vamo-troubleshooting.md and check your connection to Vamo. Tell me in plain words what is wrong and what I should do.

FAQs

Does Vamo support Gemini CLI?

Vamo has not confirmed Gemini CLI yet. It should work with a Vamo API key sent in a header, or by calling the Vamo API directly. If the Pick your tool section at Set up > Get started > Set up by hand lists Gemini CLI, it writes the current line for you.

Can Gemini CLI sign in to Vamo with a browser?

The Pick your tool section does not offer browser sign-in for Gemini CLI. The routes Vamo describes for it use a Vamo API key, created at Set up > API keys.
