What do I need to connect an AI tool to Vamo?

Four things to check before you connect an AI tool to Vamo: your account, your plan, your role, and whether your AI account is personal or company-managed.

Article summary

  • Connecting an AI tool to Vamo needs a Vamo account, a plan with API keys, and a role that can create keys.
  • Vamo API keys are on the Pro and Enterprise plans. Approving a browser sign-in needs the same plans.
  • Owners, admins and users on a Vamo account can create API keys. A read-only member cannot.
  • An AI tool connected by browser sign-in acts as the person who approved it, in that Vamo account.
  • On a company-managed AI account, an administrator may have to allow Vamo before anyone can connect it.

You need four things to connect an AI tool to Vamo. A Vamo account, a plan that includes API keys, and a role that can create keys. The fourth is knowing whether your AI account is personal or managed by your company. Checking them first saves a failed attempt.

A Vamo account

The AI tool works inside your Vamo account. With browser sign-in it acts as you. With an API key it acts within your account, limited to the permissions the key holds. Either way, you need to be able to log in to Vamo yourself.

If you belong to more than one Vamo account, check which one you are in before you connect. The tool is connected to the account you are signed in to when you approve it or create the key.

A plan that includes API keys

API keys are part of the Pro and Enterprise plans. On other plans, Set up > API keys says API keys are on Pro and Enterprise plans.

This matters even if you never plan to handle a key. Some AI tools connect by browser sign-in: the tool opens a Vamo page and you approve it. Approving needs the same plan. If the plan is missing, the approval page says connecting tools is part of the Pro and Enterprise plans.

Not sure which plan your account is on? Ask the owner of your Vamo account.

A role that can create keys

Every member of a Vamo account has a role. Owners, admins and users can create API keys. A read-only member cannot.

The approval page for browser sign-in checks your role too. A read-only member cannot approve a sign-in, and the page says so. An owner or admin of the account can change your role.

Each person connects their own tool. Do not borrow a colleague's key. Owners and admins can see every connected tool on the account. Connected tools and keys explains that page.

Know whether your AI account is personal or company-managed

This one is about your AI tool, not about Vamo.

A personal AI account is one you signed up for yourself. You control its settings, so you can usually add Vamo on your own.

A company-managed AI account is one your employer set up, often on a team or enterprise plan. Its administrators may control which outside tools members can add. They may also control which addresses a tool can reach. So the option to add Vamo may be missing, or the tool may not reach Vamo.

If your account is company-managed, find out who administers it before you start. You may need them to allow Vamo. Use the account your company gave you, and ask its administrator for what you need. Can't find where to add Vamo in my AI tool covers the most common case.

How the pieces fit

Vamo checks three things before a tool is connected. Who you are, what your plan includes, and what your role allows. Your AI tool checks one thing of its own: whether its settings allow an outside tool like Vamo.

All four have to say yes. When a connection fails, start by asking which of the four said no.

What to do next

Once you have all four, pick a way to connect. Choose how to connect compares the options.

The current steps for your tool are in the Pick your tool section at Set up by hand. Pick your tool there and that section writes what you need.

After that, run your first search.
