Discipline

The broad area of engineering a developer works in: backend, frontend, infrastructure, machine learning, data, mobile, security, or full-stack.

What it tells you about a developer

Deep work inside one discipline signals a specialist who ramps fast on adjacent tools within it. Demonstrated depth in two or more signals genuine full-stack range.

Discipline is usually visible in what a developer's code actually depends on: React-heavy work reads as frontend, Kubernetes and Terraform as infrastructure, PyTorch as machine learning. Discipline is the first thing to pin down when reading a job description, because it tells you which technologies in the list are core. A move across disciplines takes months, so a discipline mismatch is a real gap.
