Data science

Data science is the discipline of pulling answers and predictions out of a company’s data, using statistics and code.

What it tells you about a developer

Data science experience means fluency in Python, SQL, and statistics, plus daily practice explaining findings to people outside engineering. Data scientists move into data engineering and machine learning engineering with a moderate ramp, because the tools overlap heavily.

A data scientist writes code, usually Python and SQL, to explore data, build charts, and train predictive models. The role sits between two neighbors: data engineers build the pipelines that deliver the data, and machine learning engineers turn models into production software. Data scientists work closest to the business question, and their output is often a finding or a model rather than an app.
