What it tells you about a developer
Hearing wrapper about a company tells you the model came from a lab, and it settles nothing about how hard the work was. What the team built around the model is where the engineering shows.
A wrapper is software that sits between a user and a model, sending prompts and shaping the answers. Developers use the word as an insult when a product is a chat box over an API and nothing more. The same word describes serious products, because everything around the model, the data, the permissions, the interface, and the evals, is where most of the engineering lives.
